July

Friday July 1

Newspace presents the portraits of LA photographer Josh Sanseri.
For me now, photography is too large a topic so I'm refraining
from aesthetic pronouncements on photography unless it is something that really impacts me. Newspace offers darkroom and studio space by the hour and in addition to mixing out of towners into their exhibitions is a great place to meet other photographers. More at newspacephoto.com

NAAU hosts a show by Joe Manca. This work, collage, mail art and
a performance video are examples of Joe's wildly varied works.

the hipsters have moved on. Aspiring installationists may consider

July 7 - 1st Thursday

Pushdot Studio presents the photographic work
of Liz Obert. Obert's urban visual anthropology
of Portland buildings may be the last record
of a world lost to rapid development, the
PDCification of Portland. We do not seem
seem to be able to do the charming decay
of Europe, we just landfill it. Pushdot
operates a scanning and printing business
focused on color management.
830 NW14th

Blue Sky Gallery presents the photographs
of Nina Berman who has been making portraits
and conducting interviews with Americans
wounded in the Iraq War. “An image of a
wounded American soldier is one of the few
pieces of documentary evidence the American
public can see to begin a process of separating
propaganda—that war is quick and bloodless—
from truth.”
Also at Blue Sky are photographs from Cuba by
Jeffry Milstein: “Wandering alone with a hand
held camera and an open mind, I found beauty
and order in the chaos of the old streets.
I met many warm and generous Cubans who allowed
me to photograph them and invited me into
their homes and places of Work.”
1231 NW Hoyt

Mark Woolley presents the paintings of outsider
insider Walt Curtis. Curtis was the author of
Male Noche, inspiration for Gus Van Zant's first
film about homeless kids hustling for a life on
the street. He's a poet and Portland's closest
analog to Kerouac. The question for readers, is
this you then?

in printmaking, this show will be worth the stop.
416 NW 12th

Pulliam Deffenbaugh presents the small wall sculptures
of David French. French is known for his simple but
refined forms with subtle painted surfaces. "With
this new body of work, I've imposed a new set of
rules on myself, a kind of discipline to create
a working process that focuses on the interplay
of color and the painted surface. In this body
of work, I attempt to inject a rich, vibrant
palette that harkens back to modernism as well
as to my work of the early nineties. I also
find myself revisiting a field of endeavor
that I associate with such artists as Kasimir
Malevich, Paul Klee, Piet Mondrian, as well
as more contemporary figures like Agnes Martin,
Sean Scully, and Richard Diebenkorn. Within
this structure, I give myself free reign to
spontaneity, intuition, and creativity. With
a sense of discovery and playfulness, I try
to create works that are beautiful, immediate,
and intriguing."This gallery closes early
at 8:30.

Everett Lofts

I do not often get advance notice of Everett Loft
but I always recommend a look. Here you will find
affordable original art and a great place to talk.
Except for Ogle, which closes early shows there
are winding down about 10, maybe a little
later.

Lyubov Samogonina and Dan Ackerman present
"Misunderstanding" a multimedia media show
at NUE. Both are great artists and creative
instigators. NUE is Portland's unofficial
Russian and E Europe embassy as well.

Just Be Design/Compound hosts its latest Digmeout

The Digmeout model could and should be emulated
in Portland - but by whom?
Several of the artists will be visiting from
Japan for the opening.

Backspace presents a 2 year retrospective of art
for their anniversary. 200 Artists, 400+ Pieces

Portland Art Center presents Psychogeographical
Maps by Jason Frank & Andy Brownwhich which explores
the transient ambiance of certain physical locations.
All geographical locations can generate profound
memories and feelings. The locations used for this
project vary from the brackish currents of 82nd

Video art aesthetics in Portland need work, no idea
on this in advance.
